DeAgostini is a world famous Italian family-owned company founded in 1901. As the Number One Global Partwork Publishing company, DeAgostini prides itself on innovative, mass market products, covering a wide range of information and entertainment topics. In collaboration with Iconmedialab, DeAgostini developed an advanced knowledge portal sapere.it. activeZ team (one System Architect, two Bea Weblogic and Java programmers, one Oracle DBA, one Documentum expert, one Web programmer) , as a part of IconMedialab team, played major role in development of this web portal. Our team participated in requirements, analysis, design and implementation phases of the project. As the final product, DeAgostini was supplied with application and system integration of the portal and user privilege system, from the technological point of view, the performance (in terms of response time of the site), and the reliability.

Portal www.sapere.it, developed for Sapendi, required a User Study and completion of the planned General Reference area of the portal, designed to enclose the contents drawn from the encyclopedias Omnia and Gedea. Moreover, there was also integration of the section of General Reference with content extracted from other De Agostini publications: "vertical" encyclopedias, thematic publications, material distributed in newspaper - "fresh" content.

Primary objective was the completion of the portal www.sapere.it in its main sections: School, Sapere Newspapers - an article review, Dictionaries, Atlas, Time Line (for the historical consultations), Search (active search in all parts of the portal), Club Area. The section Thematic Channels offers on-line specific content and enables easy navigation for single informative Channel: General encyclopedia (subdivided in thematic categories), Articles produced by the redaction, Multimedia Gallery, Articles from the Archives, Community Area.

The study phase, carried out, comprises articulated activities: Iterative prototyping, Graphical proposal and creation of the logo, Production of the graphical guideline, Integration of interface design regarding the technological constraints, Production of the graphical templates. In the course of this phase, particular attention was dedicated to the resolution of inherent problems: The organization of enormous contents assigned for the publication, The effective representation of the existing difference between "free" contents - accessible to all customers - and "pay" contents - reserved for those who subscribe, The resolution of problems concerning the structuring of a coherent navigation between the various sections identified in the portal. As the final analysis, Sapendi was supplied with application and system integration of the portal, privileging, from the technological point of view, the performance (in terms of response time of the site), and the reliability (in terms of recovery from blocks by application and/or system). They have been using: WebLogic Personalization Server as application server for the base functionalities of the portal, Documentum WCMS (software for Content Management System), AltaVista Search SDK (software used to carry out the search inside of the portal), ArsDigita (used for the management of the "community" functionalities), Apache (used as web server), Oracle (used as relational database ).
