Pirelli is a world famous manufacturer of Tyres and Cables & Systems founded in Italy. The company is an international brand with business presence in more than 30 countries and on all continents. In partnership with IconMedialab, it developed the system to enhance that presence using Internet and keep its company identity throughout the world. Arhel team took part in this project from it's very start, by providing consulting, development and training services. Eight of our Java expert and senior consultants were engaged, within a total of over 500 in-house working days.
Our consultants were acting as part of IconMedialab team that developed Pirelli.com and supporting web sites. Development of this complex web site, which covers three Pirelli's core businesses (energy cables and systems, telecom cables and systems and tyres), required expert knowledge of many enterprise level technologies and software packages in order to deliver the project successfully. Pirelli.com also covered different aspects (B2C, B2B) of Pirelli's business processes, which also had an impact on the project complexity.
Pirelli, being the world wide corporation, needed localized versions of the web site for all of the 32 countries in which it has presence. In order to present all of it's products, the team has developed the catalog, that is very easy to use and with simple navigation. A user can browse to a product information with minimal number of clicks or go to a specific category with only one click. Interactive map was developed in order to help the user find information about local Pirelli contacts and local Pirelli web sites. Navigation through the web site is done using the menu that has tree structure in four levels and is developed in that way that can be used for all localized versions of the web site and it can be managed through one graphic interface. In order to provide information about the dealer and to enable users to make orders on line, it was necessary to integrate web application with the Pirelli's internal information system based on SAP.
This kind of a solution presents a system with very complex technological architecture. There are six production servers, where 2 of them are database servers (Oracle), and four staging servers. The hardware platform that supports the site is one of the most powerful and has been chosen by Pirelli in order to offer an effective service to the customers, reducing the times of response and waiting. The software platform is based on one of the best application servers in the world, ATG Dynamo. ATG Dynamo is Java based development environment for building personalized applications for the Web and other communication channels (e-mail messaging, wireless devices, etc.). The management of the dynamic pages is entrusted to Interwoven Teamsite, a content management system, that allows publishing of the textual contents and images in the predefined templates. With the aim to assure the necessary flexibility during maintenance, the templates are structured in modules. Interwoven TeamSite is the industry’s most advanced content management software for the enterprise.
